The process I used to create my Course Education Roadmap called into play a lot of components. As I reflect on what I had written in my Teaching Philosophy, I wanted to make sure that my course was meeting the objective of being stimulating to students so they would be interested in viewing it. I need to be engaged and authentic when I’m teaching a course, so I maintain my enthusiasm. This sparks my creative juices.
I want to engage them, so I had to think about what is it that children and ironically adults are interested in spending time learning about. It didn’t take me long to realize that people are constantly using their iPhones. In fact, most people are almost phobic at the thought of being without them. Then, after doing some simple research by asking friends and colleagues, it became clear that a lot of people do not realize how powerful this small handheld device really is. It is more powerful than what first powered men to the moon. Then, I had to come up with a problem which my course could solve. What would people want to learn about and concluded that most people are unaware of the multitude of features on their phones. The idea was then conceived to create a course about unknown Apple iPhone tips and tricks that most people don’t know about.
So, now – Did my teaching philosophy align with the idea for this course? Luckily, it was ethical and engaging with just enough added information to peak someone’s interest in taking this course.
The prescribed Roadmap made it incredibly easy to “plug n play” the framework aspects that I needed to create. It illustrated that I needed roughly 4-6 main ideas and then I knew to build out sub-categories of each main topic. The questions to be asked in the design phase were all specific, for example “Would I need a Textbook?” My personal choice is No because technology is constantly evolving. Additionally, I can easily change the course information to update it as often as I want.
Luckily, upon initial review and submission, some of my classmates (big shout out to Selina and Naomi) made some great suggestions which I have implemented in my final draft. I was using redundant statements and this Roadmap needs to be concisely written. So, what this taught me to measure twice and cut once as the adage says.
To take this process one step further, I have been researching various methods to get my course online. The features of Udemy seem to align with where I am at in this process right now. Other potential contenders include: Teachable, Skillshare ,and Kajabi. Udemy is very user friendly, and it seems like I will have a huge audience with that platform.
So, this is my first step toward becoming a course creator... Let the Journey begin.
