Week 3: PLE Assignment #1 - My Teaching Philosophy

Updated: Feb 27, 2023

For this week's assignment I'd like to take a moment and REFLECT on my Teaching Philosophy and the process that was used in creating the above document. It has been years since I really thought about why I chose to pursue a degree in Elementary Education. I got my degree in 1993, and at that time I thought that I would be able to teach at an elementary school while my daughter completed her eduction. It was a way to stay close and connected as a parent. It was my desire that I would be able to share with the children in my class a love of learning and books that had meant the world to me in the hopes that they would appreciate them too.

The process of actually writing out my renewed Teaching Philosophy caused me to reflect by putting all of my thoughts onto paper. It was a cathartic self-reflection about my core beliefs on how to become the most effective teacher that I can aspire to be. Using specific concrete examples from my classroom enabled me to delve into different areas of my teaching and serve as a reminder of my own personal growth. I had to actually THINK about the reason I was implementing this or that technique in my classroom and not just doing it because of a curriculum guide or some other required format. This allowed me to reflect on how my philosophy in growing more each day is Now congruent with my current beliefs about my teaching values.

The fact that this class (Edu 633) has a very active discussion format allowed peers to review my philosophy and make comments about it. The comment from Nasser was that he enjoyed it's thoroughness and that my writing was clear and concise. Plus the fact that I wrapped it all up in my conclusion. Additionally, I was a little amazed and amused at how quite a few of us aligned with a lot of the same values and although each of us submitted our papers before reviewing each others, we all had similar "teacher talk" language and expressions. For example, Robert uses a lot of time management in his teaching with group projects and team building activities. Our similar styles and techniques probably comes from years of training about effective classroom management techniques.
